Description

ROCHESTER HIGH STREET
TQ 7468 SE
(EASTGATE)
10/149 Nos 153, 155 and
157
27.9.90
GV II
Formerly 3 houses, now 3 shops. Mid C18, considerably altered.
Timber framed; corrugated asbestos gambel roofs (3 ranges set
end-on to street). 3 brick stacks, one to each ridge. All walls
are now covered by applied plastered cladding with mock framing,
wich replaces weatherboarding. 3 storeys. Front: 4-window range
(1:1:2). Except for No 153 (2nd floor) all windows with flush
surrounds and moulded cornices; all except for No 155 (2nd floor,
6 pane sash) with C20 replacement casements. Wooden modillion
cornice. Shop fronts: late C19 to No 153, the fascia with end
console brackets, C20 with plate glass window to No 155, and
c.1900-style front to No 157 which returns right, into Almon
Place. Right return also shares a late C20 plate glass shop
front with glazed entrance with No 157A (not included in this
listing). Rear treated as front with cladding and C20 windows.
This building is included despite the C20 alterations because of
the surviving timber frame.
