LOWER HOLKER CARK-IN-CARTMEL SD 3676 9/136 Cark Hall, North 18.5.53 Cottage and South Cottage (formerly listed as Cark Hall) G.V. II* House, now 3 houses. 1580 (V.C.H.) with C17 alterations and wing. Roughcast stone with slate roof. 2 storeys with attic, 4 bays with 3-storey, 4-bay wing projecting to left. 1st and 4th bays project under gables, the 1st bay partly covered by wing, the 4th bay narrow. Single-chamfered-mullioned windows with label moulds, of 4 lights to ground floor, but that to 3rd bay now of 2 lights and that to 4th bay is cross-mullioned. 1st floor similar, but window to 1st bay cut by wing, 2 lights visible. Attic has 3:3:2-light windows, that to centre in gabled dormer. Stair light to return of 1st bay. Central entrance has doorcase with Ionic columns, entablature, projecting over columns and open semi-circular pediment with armorial bearing: Rawlinson quartering Curwen and Monk; 12-panel door. Cross-axial stack with round shaft. Inner return of wing is similar, 2-light windows, most with leaded glazing, some with small-paned glazing, 2nd bay has stair windows; gable end has large projecting stack with round shaft. Right return has large C20 single storey lean-to outshut. 1st floor has 4:3:2-light windows, 2 with missing mullions, end gables have 3- and 2-light windows. Rear has 1st, 2nd and 3rd projecting gabled bays. 1st bay has 2-light attic window over roofless shell of gabled outbuilding; gable-end stack; return has 4-light window to ground and 1st floors, some mullions missing. 2nd bay has 3-light stair window with high transom and 3-light attic window, both with dripstones. 3rd bay has lean-to outshut with 2-light window and entrance with architrave, 3-light 1st floor window; 4th bay has projecting gable-end stack with rounded shaft, 3-light windows, 2-light attic window. Left return of 5 bays, the 3rd, 4th and 5th bays project, forming wing of 3 storeys. Ground floor has 4:2:3:4-light windows; 1st floor has 4:2:3:2:2-light windows; 2nd floor has 2-light window. Large gabled porch has entrances to 2 cottages, one with chamfered reveals and wide-boarded door. Large projecting lateral stack with set offs and rounded shafts to 2nd bay, 3rd bay has gable-end stack. Interior has ovolo beams, Tudor-arched fireplaces, stud and plaster wall. Stair with turned balusters, square newels with ball finials, moulded handrails and strings, also spiral stair, part stone, part timber.
