Gatepiers, gates and
railings to Thornbridge

Gatepiers, gates and railings. Late C19. Coursed, squared and rubble stone
with ashlar dressings and painted iron. Concave segmental curve in plan, formed
by two central gatepiers with gates between, connected to advanced piers to
either side by low, curving rubble wall surmounted by elaborate railings. Gatepiers
approximately 10 feet high of coursed squared stone with ashlar moulded bases
and cornices which are topped by fluted urns. Between the central gatepiers
are two pairs of gates and a pair of open ironwork piers from which the wide
central gates are hung, side gates to either side. Ironwork all in C18 style,
gates have simple overthrows and scroll work, railings in similar style with
three scrolled panels between thinner panel.
