Cross, by Maisemore Bridge
II
Cross. 1851 by Fulljames and Waller; re-erected 1956. Ashlar
stone. Gabled wall. Moulded top to plinth, recessed panel for
lettering, crossed keys on shield over: parapet gable with cross-
gablet apex, leaves on ridge, floriate stone cross above with open
circle. Inscription in Roman lettering 'THIS CROSS WAS TAKEN FROM
/ ST. MICHAEL'S CHURCH / GLOUCESTER IN 1956 / A CROSS WHICH STOOD
ON A / BRIDGE BUILT ABOUT A.D. 1200 / BORE THIS INSCRIPTION IN
LATIN & NORMAN FRENCH / "IN HONOUR OF / OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST / WHO
WAS CRUCIFIED FOR US / WILLIAM FITZ-ANKETIL / OF WILTON MADE THIS
CROSS / AND THIS SAME / WILLIAM FITZ-ANKETIL / BUILT THE BRIDGE OF
/ MAISEMORE." 'E.L. CHANT' cut on base. Listed principally for
historical reasons.
