Large detached house. Late C18-early C19 with later extensions.
Brick. Entrance front rendered and painted. Red tile roof to the
main body. Slate roofing to the later extensions. Rendered stacks
to main body, stacks otherwise brick. Rectangular main body with
later extensions to right gable end. C20 flat-roofed extension at
rear and not of special interest. 1:5:1-windowed entrance front.
Central portion; 3 storeys, bays to right and left 2 storeys.
Bands between floors. Two-pane sashes to the ground and first
floors. Central first floor windows with a triangular pediment
flanked by Ionic pilasters which continue to parapet. Six-pane
sashes to the first floor. Single bays either side of central body
lit by tripartite sashes with moulded architraves. Stone balconies
supported on moulded brackets to the first floor. Central double
fielded doors flanked by thin fluted columns. Rectangular hall
light with decorative glazing above. Moulded modillion eaves
cornice. Single-storey bow window to the left-hand return with 3
curving sashes flanked by Ionic columns. Flat-roofed single-storey
conservatory to the left with double glazed doors with Ionic
columns either side. Twelve-pane sashes with flat-chamfered
limestone heads at rear. Fielded 6-panel door at rear within an
open-sided porch with an entablature decorated with sheep skull and
swag motif. Large mid-late C19 canted bay to the right. Two-
storey red brick extension to the right of the entrance front is
lit by 6 and 12-pane sashes. Octagonal lantern with a domed roof
and weathervane to the service wing.
Interior; some moulded cornices and ceiling roses to main ground
floor rooms. C18 and C19 carved wood overmantel comprising two
tiers of panels to fireplace in one of the principal downstairs
rooms. The lower portion of the overmantel appears to be C19 but
in C17-early C18 style and has three arcaded panels each containing
a figure, the central panel depicting Dick Whittington and his cat.
The upper tier panelling appears to be C18 and has finely carved
foliate decoration and cherubs' heads. The same room contains two
fluted Corinthian columns flanking a recess orpossibly blind
entrance. Fine late C18-early C19 cantilevered staircase with
wrought-iron balustrade and a wreathed handrail, open string and
bracketed steps.
