Medium-sized country house, now school. Late C17, altered C19 & C20. Brick in
English bond, some stone windows, old plain tile roof. H-plan of centre 7 bay, 2
storey and tall roof with attic block, to 2 bay at each end 2 storey and attic 2
bay wide wings, of 2 bay to front, and 1 bay to rear. Front has wide central 2/3-
glazed in doorcase of architrave and panelled pilasters and moulded brackets to
pediment. All windows in centre stone cruciform. 1st floor raised band that runs
right round front. Wings have rusticated brick quoins. LH wing has painted
cruciform windows and over blank panels painted as windows. On front 16-pane flush-
frame sashes with wide glazing bars. To RH wing inner bay on side has painted
windows on blind panels. 4-Pane flush-frame sashes on other bay and on front.
Rubbed arches to wing windows. Heavy plaster cornice. 5 hip-roofed 2-light dormers
to centre, and small similar on each wing. Roofs hipped. Arched-panel stacks in
centre behind ridge, double one behind ridge at RH end, large square double one on
LH wing and one on outside of RH window. For interior see Country Life; Vol 26;
p 876-8. Was home of Lady Alice Lisle who was executed by Judge Jeffries for
harbouring men of the Duke of Monmouth's army fleeing the country after Sedgemoor.
