Public House. Front part of c1600 restored in C19 but cellars remain from an
earlier building which was originally the Bishop's court in the Soke. Rear
part is late C18 altered in C20:front part is timber-framed. Ground floor
painted brick, 1st floor plastered with jetty with moulded wooden bressumer.
Gable to left has plaster grooved to imitate masonry and fishscale tiled
gable. Tiled roof. 3 C19 casements. 3 C19 casements and double door to
ground floor. Right side elevation has a timber-framed gable with fishcale
tiles above and plaster grooved to imitate masonry below. Attached to the
left side is a converted C19 stable of painted brick with slate roof and 4
light casement. Rear part is a late C18 red brick addition in stretcher bond
with hipped tiled roof but south wall renovated in C20.
Interior of front part has stone barrel vaulted cellar with 2 double mullioned
stone windows and Tudor arched door. Outside is an ogee-headed niche. This
was originally the prison of the Bishop's court. Ground floor has some
exposed early C17 square framing, a stone chimney piece with wooden bressumer
and C18 brick wall with cambered fireplace.
