Bishop's residence, 1684. Sir C Wren for Bishop George Morley. (See
Wren Society: Vol. VII, p. 16) East wing pulled down 1781. 2 storeys
and attic. Stone ashlar with string at 1st floor level, elaborate and
bold bracketed stone cornice. Old tile roof, with stone chimney stacks.
Garden front has 11 windows, 10 dormers. Central door with bayed pediment
on rusticated Ionic piers. Coat of Arms over door. Entrance front has
5 windows in central pert and 3 dormers. Projecting south wing 3 windows
and 3 dormers. Central door, with moulded architrave and flat hood on
carved brackets. All windows mullioned and transomed, lead casements
segmental headed. The north wing consists of the chapel of Wolvesey Castle
(qv). C15 but probably incorporating older work. Five-light east wind+,
three three-light south windows, all Perpendicular. Doorways and west
gallery of circa 1684.
