Description

KENN
SX 98 SW

5/131 Outbuilding about 10 metres north
- of Bickham House and walls to
walled garden
GV II

Outbuilding, said to have been used as laundry and cottages. Probably an early C19
remodelling of an earlier building. Colourwashed rendered red sandstone; slate roof,
gabled at ends, right end stack.
Plan: Rectangular on plan, at right angles to the service end of Bickham House
(q.v.). A cross passage through the centre of the building gives access to the very
large walled garden to the north. The building appears to have been used as 2
cottages in the early C19, on of them possibly the gardener's cottage ; an C18 window
in the right gable end is not necessarily in situ.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical front with a rounded corner at the left end with 2
first floor windows and a loading door, 3 ground floor doors and 3 windows. The
right hand doorway leads into a passage with access to the walled garden behind. The
windows are early C19 16-pane sashes. The gable end of the right return has a small
C18 casement window with square leaded panes. Loft doorway on left return. Tall
rendered walls to walled garden behind outbuilding included in the listing.
Interior: The right hand end retains a small early C19 chimney-piece group value
with Bickham House and Bickham Farmhouse.
