House. C16 rebuilding of older structure, altered, and extended in early C17 with further mid-C19 alterations. Timber-framed with rendered infill on sandstone and brick base; plain tiled roofs. Hall and cross-wing type plan; main part of three framed bays aligned east/west with chimney at junction of central and east bay with group of four star-shaped C19 stacks; large external chimney to rear of central bay with row of four similar stacks; there are two service wings adjoining the north elevation, one is of a single framed bay, is situated at the junction of the central and east bay and now provides the main entrance; the other is lower in height and of four framed bays and encloses the north external chimney. The cross-wing is of two framed bays and adjoins the west gable end; it has an external sand- stone chimney with two original star-shaped brick stacks (with C19 caps) on the west side of the south bay and a central south porch wing. Partly two storeys, attic and cellar; partly single storey and attic with dormers. Framing : some C16 close-set studding in cross-wing; otherwise mainly four panels from sill to wall-plate, short straight braces in upper corners and collar and tie-beam trusses with struts throughout, some having decorative diagonal struts. Porch wing is of close-set studding and has a jettied first floor and attic floor with moulded bressummers on shaped brackets. East entrance elevation: east gable end of main part to left has a 3-light ground floor casement and the date "1606" inscribed on a piece of timber attached to the tie-beam; rectangular light at ground and first floor level in angle to right; single-bay north wing has two first floor cross-casements with plank weatherings; beneath is a C19 timber-framed gabled porch on stone base with possibly the original C17 door re-used. To right, from behind this wing, projects the four-bay wing; this has a ground floor 4-light casement with a plank weathering, a 2-light casement and a bay window with 5-light casement; two gabled half-dormers, one with a 3-light casement and one projects as an oriel window and has a 2-light casement; also a gabled dormer with a 2- light casement. Interior not inspected but recorded as having some C17 panelling on the ground floor and some fragments of C15 tiles. The house stands on a former moated site, the remains of which can be seen on the south side. (VCH 3 (i), p 111; BoE, p 151).
