Country house, now school. 1865 by T Roger Smith for Unwin Heathcote. Red brick
with box ground stone dressings; gabled plain Staffordshire tile roofs with
stone-coped gabled brick ridge and end stacks with diagonally-set flues. L-plan
with servants' wing projecting to front right. High Victorian style to asym-
metrical elevations. 2 storeys and attic; 6-window range. Gabled central porch:
flush crocketed gable over pointed-arched doorway with ballflower ornament to
moulded architrave set on engaged shafts with foliate capitals: trefoiled frieze
and stone bands to first floor which has 2-light chamfered stone-mullioned window;
hood mould with foliate stops over 2-light Decorated window. 5-light pointed-
arched window to hall on right with high transom dividing upper row of star-shaped
lights from trefoiled lights; horned plate-glass sashes set in chamfered stone
architraves and trefoiled lights to gabled dormers. Plain gable end to right with
raised brickwork beneath stack. Canted stair tower at angle with service wing,
with crocketed capitals to pointed-arched doorway, small trefoiled lights and
gargoyles to quatrefoil parapet. Partly-gabled 2-storey, 6-window range service
wing to left has plate-glass sashes set in chamfered stone architraves and 2
half-dormers with 2 lateral stacks to left. Right side wall has canted stone
oriel with foliate-carved frieze and capitals; hood mould with foliate stops over
3-light window with high and low transoms dividing trefoiled lights from trefoils
above and quatrefoils below; square-headed doorway set in segmental-headed archi-
trave with ballflower ornament; trefoiled lights to gabled dormers; gable end to
right has similar 3-light window above canted oriel with trefoiled lights. Rear
elevation has pointed-arched lights with trefoil-headed sashes to first floor and
to canted and square bay windows; canted oriel with foliate-carved frieze and
half-hipped dormer windows adjoins central gabled projection; 5-light arcaded
window with engaged shafts above similar 2-light window and hood mould with
foliate stops over pointed-arched doorway; then gabled bay with canted bay window
to plainer service end which has sashes set in shouldered architraves. Interior:
decorative tile floor to lobby. Panelled doors and shutters. Hall has French-
Gothic fireplace, panelled dado and neo-Georgian staircase with twisted
balusters. Rest of interiors have classical cornicing and ceiling bosses, and
some marble fireplaces. T R Smith was foundereditor of "The Architect" and
Professor of Construction at University College, London, and is noted as the
architect of buildings in both England and India.
