House. C15 E wing, C16 hall range, C17 alterations to roof and rear of E
wing, present internal chimney C18, rear studio extension 1982 in form
of a 3-bay open hall with entrance link. Timber frames on brick or flint
sills, frame exposed on W half of N side with red brick infill, similar
brick casing to E wing, dark weatherboarding to rear extension, steep
old red tile roofs. A 2-storeys, L-shaped house with a single-storey
lean-to at each end of older N range parallel with road. N front has 3
casement windows to each floor. E wing has exposed internally the
structure of a fine close-studded crosswing of 2 or more bays, jettied
on adjacent sides, on N and E, formerly gabled to N but now roofed
uniformly with hall range and truncated on S end. Massive timbers, lofty
ground floor, and deep-chamfered and hollow-stopped joists. Dragon-beam
and its corner post survive with mortices for a 5-light central
diamond-mullioned window with shutter groove central on N side. Single
large curved brace in each bay on W side and similar mullioned window
blocked intact on 1st floor with shutter groove for similar window below
on ground floor. Double-curved tension braces support bay-post on W side
of 1st floor. W face of W wall of crosswing carefully close-studded as
if to form upper end of an open hall on W but no doorway detectable.
Later clasped-purlin roof, straight wind-braces, squint butted scarf
joint, and inserted diagonal corner fireplace. 2-bay hall range has a
short irregular gap against the W wing as it is not attached at right
angles. Jowled posts and curved braces to central open truss with
cranked tie-beam, and signs of similar braces and tie-beam cut out in
upper chamber at E end. Chamfered and stopped cross- anti axial-
floorbeams on same bay divisions. Clasped purlin roof with wind-braces.
Tension braces in N and W walls. Mortices and shutter-groove for a
4-light diamond mullioned window on S side of W bay next central bay
post, and corresponding shutter groove on N wall both at 1st floor level
indicating a floor originally in this bay and probably in both bays of
this part. Edge-halved scarf joint with bridled butts in N wallplate
near W corner. W wall shows weathering of timbers on W face giving no
clue to the position of the service rooms of this house. Named by OS
Little Heath Great Farm Cottage. Site transfered from Northchurch parish
in boundary change 1st April 1985.
