Freestanding arch. Probably early C20, erected between 1905 and
1926 for Herbert Goode (1865-1937) a wealthy glass and china
merchant who began the Japanese Garden in 1905. Timber painted
red. Torii or arch marking the path to a Fox Shrine (Inari).
Converging uprights with main crosspiece projecting. Lower
tennoned cross-piece with prominent wedged joints and central
framed plaque with inscription. Heavy capping timber swept up
into horns. (Japanese Garden (1933) 5).
