House, sometime an inn. C16 or earlier, altered in C18. Timber
frame plastered and lined as ashlar on a stucco plinth. Steep
old red tile roofs. A 3-unit composite plan house with lower 2
storeys service wing on left with later single storey hipped
extension to rear, and main block formerly of 2 storeys and
attics with gabled rear stair turret, rear lateral chimney to
middle part, and later external gable chimney on N. 2 windows, 2
storeys symmetrical front to main block with modillioned boxed
eaves cornice on 3 small shaped brackets, projecting plinth and
central door up 2 steps. Lower, projecting 2-storeys service
wing on left with plinth and one window on each floor. Flush box
sash windows with moulded surrounds and 3/6 panes in main range
but window on left of door altered to 3-light casement. C19
sashes in service wing with divided large panes. Interior of
main range has heavy chamfered axial beams with ogee stops, wide
4-centred brick arched fireplace with smaller one above, and
winding stair in turret. Close timbering, tension braces and
heavy jowled posts exposed in service wing. Fine tall rear
chimney with tumbled brick offsets. Formerly the Blue Anchor
Inn.
