House, built as lodge to Home Farm (not listed) at Wrotham Park (q.v.).
1860 on datestone. Built for G. Byng, 2nd Earl of Strafford, by Henry
Clutton. Polychrome brick with stone dressings. Machine tiled roof. Main
block of 2 storeys has gable end to road. Entrance porch is attached to
left return corner and projects forward. Porch: 2 bays, 6 stone piers on
a brick plinth. Square bases and capitals to piers, chamfered to diagonal
shafts. Hipped roof. Later enclosing glazing. Gabled front: ground floor
4 light cross window with a stopped hood mould which merges with a
prominent string course. Plinth. 2 light first floor window in chamfered
stone surround with upper string course diverted to form a frame. Stone
coped gable with stone kneelers and patterned burnt headers. String
courses returned. Close eaves and similar windows on returns. Gable on
right return. Left return has large external stack with chamfered
corners on ground floor and datestone with intertwined S's below a stone
course. Stack rises to 3 circular shafts with common stone capping. Rear
gable detailing similar to front. C20 extension to right not of special
interest. Interior not inspected. Attached to porch to left is a low
brick wall with chamfered stone coping and railings. Gates missing but
wall continues across entrance drive and steps up to left.
