Description

SY 08 NW WOODBURY BONFIRE LANE, Woodbury

2/75 Haydon's Cottage
-
- II

Detached cottage. Late C16. Roughcast cob on stone footings; thatched roof, half-
hipped. A small 3-room plan house; the position of the original entrances is
uncertain, and there may never have been a cross passage; it is possible that the
house may have had a baffle entrance; each room is of a single bay. One axial
stack, with brick shaft, heats both hall and service end; inner room unheated.
Stairs to rear of stack, with C19 staircase at left-hand end. Later extensions to
left and right-hand ends. 2 storeys.
Front: irregular 3-window range; all windows with C20 metal casements; present
entrance into kitchen (service end, to right). No windows to rear as the cottage
is built into the bank.
Interior: ceiling cross beam to each room, chamfered with big step stops. One
jointed cruck above inner room, halved at apex, trenched purlins; other principals
are straight, apex carpentry not visible.
