Terrace of 4 houses and attached railings to Nos 4 and 6 London Road and No.1, Hewlett Road. c1790-1820, shown on the Post Office Map of 1820, with later additions and alterations including service range to No.2. Ashlar over brick with slate roof and wrought- and iron balconies, porches and railings. Double-depth plan with service wings to rear. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys on basement, 12 first-floor windows (3 per house). First- and second-floor bands; second-floor band inscribed `OXFORD BUILDINGS'. 6/6 sashes where original, taller to first floor; basements have 3/3 and 4/4 sashes; all in plain reveals and with sills. Left entrances: 3 steps to 4-panel doors (some part-glazed) with fanlights with batwing and circle motif glazing bars to 2 to left. Crowning low parapet and copings. Left return has 3 storeys, 3 first-floor windows. First-floor band surmounted by pilaster strips to ends and between windows which interrupt second-floor band. First floor has 6/6 sashes, second floor has 3/3 sashes, all in plain reveals with tooled architraves and sills, those to second floor with cornices and aprons, further apron to first-floor central windows. Ground floor has C20 plate-glass shop-front windows. Central entrance a part-glazed, 4-panel door with sidelights and overlight. Crowning low parapet and copings. Rear retains some 3/3 sashes. INTERIOR: No.1 Hewlett Road has marble fireplace with fluted sides; original joinery includes panelled shutters to several windows and 6-fielded-panel doors, otherwise not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: first floor, outer windows have individual balconies with enriched rods and central scroll panels; similar balconies to left return. Porches except to No.6 have lozenge and scrolls, oval, and lattice motif to uprights (tent roof to No.2 missing) have embellished uprights. Forecourt lancet railings and gate with urns to stanchions to No.1 Hewlett Road (London Road facade). Area railings to No.4 are embellished rods; stick area railings to No.6.
