- Kimberly

3 cottages. Mid - late C17 core much altered in the late C18 - early C19, some late
C19 modernisations, Kimberly thoroughly refurbished 1987-88. Plastered stone rubble,
parts are cob on stone rubble footings; stone rubble and brick stacks topped with C19
and C20 brick; thatch roof.
Plan: 3 cottages occupy an L-plan building. The main block faces south-south-east,
say south. It contains 2 2-room plan cottages. The Old Barn is the left (west)
cottage. It has a central front entrance, a gable-end stack to left and to right an
axial stack backing onto Old Barn Cottage adjoining that end. The adjoining room of
Old Barn Cottage has an axial stack and the right (east) end room has a large
projecting gable-end stack. Old Barn Cottage entrance to rear. Kimberly projects
forward at right angles from the right (east) end but does ot extend back as far as
the end stack of Old Barn Cottage. Kimberly has a 3-room plan. An axial stack
serves the front end room and another on the outer side serves the outshut there.

The main block is the historic core of the house. This is essentially the result of
the late C18 - early C19 alterations but Old Barn Cottage retains evidence of mid -
late C17 origins. The crosswing appears to be a C19 addition which included a
cottage and agricultural store, now all brought into domestic use.
All 3 cottages are 2 storeys with secondary rear outshots.
Exterior: The main block has an overall 4-window front, most are C19 and C20 casements
with glazing bars. The left 2-room section of the Old Barn is flanked by a horned
16-pane sash to left (there is another in the end wall) and a C20 French window to
right. The doorway contains a late C19 4-panel door behind a contemporary gabled
porch with elliptical-headed outer arch and cusped bargeboards. The main block roof
is gable-ended. The crosswing (Kimberly) has a 3-window front of late C20 casements
with leaded diamond pane effect. 2 of the first floor windows have gables over. The
front end of the roof here is half-hipped and in front of this end a late C19 - early
C20 glass-roofed conservatory is now (1988) under reconstruction.
Interiors have plain carpentry detail where exposed. Only the right room of the main
block (in Old Barn Cottage) shows evidence of C17 structure; it has chamfered
crossbeam and half-beam with bar-runout stops. The fireplace here is blocked. Roofs
not inspected.
These 3 cottages form part of an attractive group of listed buildings in the hamlet
of Kingscott.
