Description

ST GILES
SS 51 NE IN THE WOOD
8/202 Linhay approximately 8 metre south
- of Whiteleigh Barton

II

Linhay. Probably C18. Cob on stone rubble footings with some stone rubble patching;
corrugated asbestos roof, formerly thatch.
Plan: Narrow linhay facing north towards the Whiteleigh Barton (q.v.) and forming the
southern side of an enclosed courtyard alongside the main block of the house.
Exterior: 6-bay linhay was originally open-fronted but is now clad with
weatherboarding.
The crossbeams supporting the tallet/hayloft floor are rough-finished and at the
front they rest on upright timber posts. On top of the front of the beams are cruck
posts and there are straight principals to rear and have pegged lap-jointed collars.
Linhays including cruck trusses are rare.
