Description

SX 47 NW MILTON ABBOT MILTON ABBOT

10/242 Tooker headstone about 9m south
- east of the porch of the Church of
St Constantine

GV II

Headstone. Probably late C18. Freestone. Triangular-headed stone commemorating
William Tooker of Longbrooke, died 1645, the style and the verse are, however, late
C18. The headstone has a border of flat acanthus leaves and incized scrollwork above
the inscription. A verse below praises William Tooker's generosity to the poor "his
heart his hand his dore his purse/to them were open still/his love to them did never
dye/appeareth by his will/". The headstone may be conceived as a charity board
possibly referring to a particular endowment. An unusual example of a retrospective
headstone.
