Longhouse, abandoned as living accommodation. Early C16, with additions to front
right and left probably of early C17, addition to left side may be original, stair
tower possibly also later addition. Granite rubble with granite dressings, dry slate
roofs.
Hall and shippon probably of C16. Hall and attic with single-storied outshut which
may be original. Entrance to passage with no wall dividing off shippon, door to left
to hall. The stairs, in a projection to the front of the hall, are a later addition
and it is likely that the house was originally lower, probably the same height as the
shippon. The fireplace has gone and its original position is uncertain; it may have
been in a recess in the front wall of the hall, but the thick wall backing on to the
passage suggests a fireplace in the more normal axial position. Doorways are
staggered front and rear, with central drain in shippon. Addition to front right
formed extra shippon space.
2 storeys, hall to left has stair tower with pitched roof and small single light in
hollow chamfered granite surround, battered walls corbelled out under stair treads;
lean-to at left return; attached to front and built around stair tower, single-storey
addition with single light in hollow-chamfered granite surround, unglazed, and door,
continued along front of building to form porch wih stone bench to side, to right
with ventilation slit under eaves and door to front and inner side; hall possibly had
former upper window, slate dripstone remaining. Door to passage has granite surround
with 4-centred arch, hollow-chamfered with straight end stops, later door with reused
strap hinges; lower roof level over passage and shippon end. At right return, lean-
to has small single light with granite lintel, shippon has wall chamfered to left,
drain, central window at ground floor with rough cut granite surround, ventilation
slit right and left and above in gable. Rear has loading door under eaves to left in
shippon, separate entry to shippon to left of site of rear of passage, with flat
chamfered granite lintel. Rear of hall end has small single,light in hollow-
chamfered granite surround, formerly 3-light granite hollow-chamfered C17 casement
with mullions cut away and 2-light wooden casement inserted, single light in hollow-
chamfered granite light.
Interior passage open on lower side to shippon, wall inserted half-way across, 6
rough cut tie beams in shippon and central drain along floor, 4-bay C19 roof with
principal rafters, collars, 2 rows of purlins; in rear wall at base, a horizontal
granite opening possibly for channelling water through shippon;
granite floor. To left of passage, granite doorway to hall with depressed 4-centred
arched head and broach stops, door with reused strap hinges, 2 steps up to hall wall
about 90 centimetres thick. Small single light in rear wall has splayed reveal, end
wall has small keeping hole, front wall has 2 recesses formed by granite built out
from front wall, large keeping hole to right of doorway to stair tower with flat
chamfered timber lintel and chamfered jamb to left, missing to right, former door
opening to front lean-to, blocked with timber lintel remaining. Granite newel stair
with keeping hole in wall of stair tower; 3-bay C19 roof over sleeping loft.
An important building where the later accretions are of interest to the evolution.
Forms a group with Eastontown (qv).
