Description

CULMSTOCK PRESTCOTT
ST 01 SE
9/62 Lippincott chest tomb
- approximately 4 metres west of
Prescott Baptist Church
GV II
Chest tomb. Dated 1753 in memory of Mary Lippincott. Beerstone ashlar.
Rectangular in plan the chest tomb stands on a gadrooned base. The sides are
panelled with a Vitruvian scroll frieze and the lid is soffit-moulded and has a low-
pitched ridge on the top. Some of the panels are inscribed with Roman serif upper
and lower case lettering. The left of the 2 south-facing panel records the death of
Mary Lippincott in 1753; the right one commemmerates Elizabeth Lippincott (d. 1760) and
other members of the family who died about this time are recorded on other panels.
For a Devon non-conformist monument this is both unusually early and unusually
ornate.
