wall and grotto approximately 3
metres south of Chulmleigh Rectory

Balustrade, steps, retaining wall and grottos. Probably early C19. Stone rubble
with ashlar dressings. Stone retaining wall with balustraded stone parapet breaks
forward at centre to form semi-circular arched deep grotto with flight of stone steps
to each side. To the left of the left-hand flight, the retaining wall is pierced
with another semi-circular arched opening to a second grotto with narrow lancet to
left. The front grotto is partly lined with large limestone fossils. Steps and
parapet moulded short rounded stone balusters, moulded stone handrails and low ashlar
piers at intervals of square section with panelled sides and ball finials.
