Description

MODBURY BROAD STREET
SX 6451-6651
(south side)
7/73
No 14

GV II

House in row, set-back from buildings to left. C18 or earlier, C19 and later
modifications to facade. Rendered, slate roof. The steep-pitched roof and set-
back position, predicate an early building. Two storeys and attic, 2 windows;
at ground floor a small 6-pane deep-set sash, then near-central narrow 6-panel
door, and, far right, 6-panel fielded door under C19 stone cornice on consoles,
probably at former through-way. First floor has a 16-pane and a 12-pane sash,
each in architrave, two small 2-light casement gabled dormers. Decorative ridg-
ing. Brick stack, left, cropped at level of ridge of Lloyds Bank (qv). A
market building stood in the road near this point until 1827, and may account
for the setting back of this and the adjoining property. A mid-C19 engraving
shows regular 2-bay front with wide paired doors to right.
