The Old Forge

GV II

Cottage, one of a pair, formerly the village forge. Possibly C16 origins, but
mainly C18 or C19 fabric. Rendered cob or rubble, thatched roof; one storey
extension to left - the forge - slate roof. Main building has gabled wing
brought forward at right end, formerly was 2-storey porch. Two storeys, 2 + 1
windows, mainly 2-light glazing-bar casements, but 3-light first floor left.
Centred on main block is larger 2-light casement under a thatched hood, former
doorway flanked by part-height raking buttress. Upper windows to eyebrows.
Porch wing has small 2-light over larger casement, former door: door now set on
left return of the porch. Large stack to right mainly in The Farriers (q.v.).
To left, the former forge is a 2-windowed unit on one floor, with cross-
mullioned C19 windows; high brick stack. Interior not inspected.
