Cottage. Circa mid C17 or possibly earlier restored in C20. Slate rubble;
rendered cob upper walls around centre left hand front ground floor window
land at the back. thatched roof gabled at left hand end and half-hipped at
the right hand end eyebrowed eaves over the first floor windows. Large
projecting slate rubble stack with set offs at the left hand gable end its
tapered shaft has slate weathering. Large projecting lateral stack at the
back of the right hand end with set offs, slate hung sides and rendered
tapered shaft, and with a projecting round oven at the base with a slate
roof.
Plan: 2 room plan with a central cross passage. The slightly larger left
hand room is probably the parlour heated from a gable end stack. The right
hand room is the kitchen with a rear lateral stack with an oven. The
original stair position is uncertain; a C20 stair has been installed
against the back wall across the end of the passage and part of the
partition has been removed from between the left hand room and the passage.
A small 1-storey 1-room plan extension was added in C20 to the right hand
end and set back.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Nearly symmetrical 3 window range. First floor C20
small 2-light casements and ground floor C20 casements, 2-lights to left
and 3 lights to right; all with leaded panes and slate cills. Central
doorway to right of centre with c20 nail-studded flank door and slated
canopy on timber cantilevers.
Asymmetrical fenestration at the back with C20 casements and large lateral
stack to left.
Interior: the left hand room has a replaced cross beam with thin ovolo
moulding, and chamfered joists with hollow step stops; the fireplace at the
left hand end has chamfered wooden lintel with notched stops. The right
hand room has closely spaced ceiling joists and there is no main beam; the
lateral fireplace at the back of the room has what appears to be a stop
chamfered heavily cambered timber lintel and an oven in the rear left hand
side. Between the passage and the right hand room there is a plastered
stud partition and between the left hand room and the passage only the
vertical studs remain of a partition some of the studs are reused chamfered
joists.
Roof: The roof structure is said to have been replaced.
