1/47 Church of St Michael
4-10-60 and All Angels (formerly listed
as Parish Church)
GV II*
Parish Church, now school Chapel. Possibly medieval in origin but largely
remodelled, C17 (datestone 1650). Ashlar with stone-slate roof. Undiffer-
entiated nave and chancel with west porch. The east window is of 3 cinquefoiled
lights and Perpendicular tracery under a pointed head. The remaining windows
are of 2 lancet lights with plain spandrel lights under pointed heads. Porch
has a south doorway with, lugged, moulded architrave over which is an idiosyn- -
cratic entablature with a highly pulvinated frieze, the whole supporting a
moulded elliptical archway. Double C17 plank door.
Internal features: plastered barrel roof; C19 wall painting to east end by
Mrs Symer of the mansion: C19 glass: other fittings largely C19.
Pevsner disputes the C17 date for the main body of the church, favouring a
later period. (RCHM, Dorset, vol.III, p. 101/2, no. 1. Newman, J. and Pevsner, N.,
The Buildings of England: Dorset, 1972, p.225. )
