Howe Green Farmhouse
GV II
Barn. 1757. Timber framed, weatherboarded, roofed with corrugated asbestos. 3
bays aligned E-W, with midstrey to S, converted to a lean-to in C20. Lean-to
extensions to N and S. Pegged and jointed hardwood frame. Primary straight
bracing. Arched braces to both internal tiebeams. Clasped purlin roof, rebuilt
in E bay. The SE post of the midstrey is inscribed: B . This date is
1757
confirmed by documentary evidence of its construction in the court roll, 31
October 1757 (Essex Record Office, DHn MllO). Firmly dated agricultural
buildings are rare, so this barn is of exceptional historic interest. (See
article by Steven Potter to be published in Essex Archaeology and History, 1985
or 1986).
