Description

MORETON CHURCH ROAD
TL 50 NW
4/41 (south side)
Kitchen, now garage
approx. lOm N.W. of Hancocks
GV II
Detached kitchen, now garage. C16. Render over timber frame; gabled old tile
roof. One storey; 3 bays. Two sets of C20 double doors. Interior: 3 bays
of good quality timber framing with internal wall bracing; jowled posts, braced
to tie beams, to clasped purlin roof with curved wind braces. Floored end
bay; two bays, originally open to roof, have substantial soot-blackening and
steeply-raking braces to central tie beam. Substantial remains of diamond-
mullioned windows and original entrance door; replacement moulded window in
south gable. Patterning of soot position and of openings are suggestive of
some form of fire hood, off-centre in one bay. A remarkably complete example
of a "medieval type" detached kitchen, associated with a late medieval hall
house (Hancocks).
