28.6.54 gateway and railings to
NW of Chigwell
manor house

GV II

Wrought iron gate and gateway, early C18, with wrought iron railings on dwarf
wall each side, the whole approx. 48 metres long. Dwarf wall of red bricks,
Flemish bond, with stone coping, and at each end a brick pier with stone coping.
Originally the whole formed a symmetrical arrangement. The original gateway
is not in use now, and a double gateway, C20, has been inserted in the SW
section. Railings restored, gate and gateway mainly original. The stone urns
recorded in the 1952 schedule were missing at time of survey (1983).
