6/102 Entrance gates at Pegsdon

Entrance gates at E entrance to Hexton Manor (in parish of Hexton,
Hertfordshire). Early-mid C19. Cast iron. Approximately 3 metres high in total
and 6 metres in width. Consists of 4 rectangular openwork piers supporting
double gates to centre and approximately one metre of slightly curving screen to
either side. Piers have palmette and medallion panel decoration and are
surmounted by urn finials. The gates and screens have plain verticals broken by
decorative bands; arrowhead dograil to base, anthemions to middle, geometric
patterns above. Ornamental arrowhead finials along top. Double gates curve
upwards to suggest central crest. LH screen is in fact disguised pedestrian
gateway.
