ROCHESTER HIGH STREET
TQ 7468 SW
9/135 No 105 (with
railings to
19.2.70 frontages) and No
41 La Providence
GV II
One (and the better preserved) of a pair of houses that flanks
the approach to La Providence (formerly Theobald Square). Mid
C19 Italianate brick with heavy stucco detailing; Welsh slate
hipped roof. Double-depth plan with central hall and rear stair.
2½ storeys; 2 principal fronts, one to High Street, the other to
La Providence (and visible from High Street). High Street
elevation: the treatment of the upper floors is identical to that
of No 103 ie prominent moulded cornice, heavy quoining and flat
bands between floors. Upper half-storey with 4-pane hornless
sash windows; 1st floor horned sashes in reveals with moulded
window surround and cornice (but no blind housings). Fine
wrought-iron balconies with palmettes (to lower rail) and
festoons (to upper rail) all supported on cast-iron console
brackets. Ground floor (with stucco plinth) has 2 hornless sash
windows in simply moulded stucco surrounds and, to the right and
standing forward, a porch with round-headed doorway, impost band,
heavy keyblock and moulded cornice; panelled door with fanlight.
The La Providence elevation mirrors No 103 (but retains its
ground floor intact); 3 bays with narrow, slightly projecting
central entrance bay; round-headed recessed doorway with impost
band, large keyblock and moulded cornice; door with pierced
panels and fanlight. Upper floor with tripartite side windows,
those to 1st floor with surrounds and balconies as to High
Street. Note the fine lime pointing which may be original. To
the left (towards La Providence) is a 2 storey extension, roughly
contemporary, with vehicular entrance, and horned sash windows
above. Sash windows to side and rear, the latter with semi-
circular stair turret. Interior: curved open-well stair with
stick balusters rises from basement to attic with a glazed dome
for top lighting; several panelled doors with surrounds. The
contemporary spear-head railings to High Street and La Providence
frontages are included in this listing.
