Description

TL 73 SW WETHERSFIELD GOSFIELD ROAD
(north side)

1/148 Ancillary building 8
metres north of Danes
Vale Farmhouse

GV II

Ancillary building, probably a byre originally, now stables. Early C16. Timber
framed, weatherboarded, roofed with handmade glazed red pantiles and red clay
corrugated tiles. 3 bays facing SE. Rear extension with catslide roof. Small
C20 lean-to extension with corrugated iron roof at left end. C20 open canopy of
corrugated asbestos on posts at front. One storey with attics. 3 halved stable
doors. Jowled posts, heavy studding, some wattle and daub infill in rear wall,
crownpost roof with axial bracing. C20 inserted floor. The left and middle
bays have light smoke-blackening on the roof timbers, probably indicating former
use as a smithy or bakehouse, but former use as a dwelling remains a
possibility.
