House. Late medieval, altered in C16 and C19. Mainly timber framed, partly
brick, all roughcast rendered, roofed with handmade red plain tiles. 2-bay hall
facing NW, with late C16 axial stack in right bay; originally storeyed service
bay to right, with C19 external stack beyond; mid-C19 brick crosswing to left of
hall, projecting to front and rear of main range, with internal stack at left;
C19 single-storey service wing of painted brick to rear of service bay and right
end of hall, with internal stack at end. C20 single-storey lean-to extension
along remainder of rear, completing an almost rectangular plan. Lean-to garage
with roof of corrugated asbestos to left of crosswing. 2 storeys. Ground
floor, 2 mid-C19 sashes of 4 lights, one C20 casement. First floor, 2 similar
sashes, 2 C20 casements. Early C20 half-glazed door with sidelights at front of
C19/20 hipped porch. C19 fretted bargeboards on gable of crosswing. Axial stack
rebuilt in C19 from attic level. Wide wood-burning hearth in hall, facing to
left, with chamfered mantel beam with lamb's tongue stops, reduced by modern
brickwork. Late C16 inserted floor in hall, comprising a chamfered axial beam
and plain joists of vertical section. The service bay has exposed studding,
some of it original, and plain joists, some of horizontal section and original,
lodged longitudinally; C20 grate. The left crosswing has a C20 grate, and
higher storeys than the remainder. The walls of the main range have been raised
to 2 full storeys, probably in the C19, and the roof is C19. Most of the
interior is fully plastered, revealing little of the frame except at the service
end. The service wing has a C19 bread oven to right of the stack, with cast
iron door, but the rear half of the oven is closed off with brick and probably
demolished beyond. An extensive collection of deeds from the 1670s, in the
possession of the owner, will be deposited with Essex Record Office.
