Description

TL 4446 THRIPLOW CHURCH STREET (West Side) 14/288 Nos. 20, 22 and 24 (Bacon's Farmhouse) 22.11.67 (formerly listed as GV Nos 1, 2 and 3) Farmhouse converted to three dwellings. Late C15 or early C16 with late C16 and C17 alterations. Timber-framed and plastered with exposed timber-frame in west elevation. Plain tiled roofs. Large square planned red brick ridge stack with grouped shafts to right hand of main range; north gable end stack to cross wing with three paired offsets and two attached diagonal shafts; tall C19 stack to north-west of cross wing. One storey and attic main range with gablet and half hipped roof to west (west elevation originally jettied with interrupted tie beam and with two oriel windows); roof over hall raised in C17 and dormer windows inserted with acorn drop finials. Two storey cross wing to east, jettied to north with four curved jetty brackets. One first floor casement window and one gabled three-light casement dormer window; boarded door to left hand and half glazed door to right hand in lobby entry position, three ground floor casement windows with glazing bars (one ovolo mullioned window in east facade). Interior: Cross wing with square sectioned floor joists; pair of blocked doorways with two-centred heads to former cross passage triple-roll-moulded ceiling beam; cambered tie beam witn curved braces and crown post; chamfered four-centred arch to south fireplace: main range with posts of earlier building, exposed C17 frame and stop-chamfered principal floor joists possibly reset; sealed open hearths, bedroom fireplace with plaster decoration.
