4/9 The Priory and Conservatory, and West Priory G.V. II

Small country house, now subdivided. Dated 1831. Coursed squared rubble with freestone dressings; slate roofs; rubble and freestone stacks. T-plan in an elaborate Tudor Gothic style. 2 storeys and attics. South-west elevation (West Priory). 1.1.3.1.1 bays. The second and sixth bays are slightly advanced and are surmounted by gables with a single pointed light and octagonal - ashlar stacks to the sides; on the ground floor is a niche under a cusped ogee head and on the first is an image niche under a highly decorative canopy with ogee tracery and top. The outer bays have single-light casements under dripmoulds. The centre bays have 2-light cross windows; central 1-2-1 light oriel window with cusped ogee heads and a pierced parapet. Central projecting single storey porch: octagonal corner turrets with panelled and crested tops; chamfered door surround with 4-centred head, date in spandrels, and arms above. Canted bay on north-west gable end; elaborate carved details and motto. South-east elevation (The Priory). To the left is the gable end of West Priory: moulded string and octagonal moulded finials with crested tops. In the centre is a projecting single storey porch: panelled octagonal corner turrets, embattled parapet, chamfered doorway with 4-centred head; panelled and traceried inner doors. Setback above the porch is a 3-light Perpendicular style staircase window. To the right of the window is a projecting stack with 2 pairs of octagonal chimneys linked by a cusped traceried stretcher and a parapet above. To the right of the porch a single storey block with lancet windows projects and links to the conservatory: an elaborate Perpendicular style single storey building of 3.4.3 bays, the centre 4 projecting as a canted bay window, with cusped ogee heads to the tracery; decorative parapet of daggers and inverted daggers, thin octagonal pinnacles with crested tops; ogee-headed doorways in projecting centre of gable ends; iron glazing bars and iron panelled roof trusses. Interior. West Priory. Entrance hall: panelled Perpendicular style doors and wall panelling, all with cast iron tracery; ribbed and panelled ceiling. Drawing room: skirting board with quatrefoil frieze; panelled and ribbed ceiling, elaborate frieze; 4-centred arch to bay at north-west end. The Priory. Sitting (dining) room: framed ceiling with fleurons and carved foliage; shutters and doors with iron traceried panels, 4-centred heads to doors. Staircase hall: dog-leg stair with Gothic panelled iron balustrade; stained glass to hall window.
