Description

BICKLEY C.P. BICKLEY MOSS SJ 54 NW Church of St.Wenefrede 3/5 1/3/1967 II Church, 1892, by Douglas and Fordham at the expense of the Marquess of Cholmondeley. Rock-faced snecked red sandstone rubble; roof of small graded green slates with terracotta ridge tiles. Tudor tower with spire; south porch (against tower); 3-bay nave with narrow north passage-aisle under the same roof; chancel; north vestries: for priest off chancel, for choir off west bay of nave. Massive squat 2-stage tower with splay-footed octagonal spire has west window of 3 lights with 3-light bell openings above; small pentice-roofed windows on each cardinal face of spire. 3-light square-headed windows with simple tracery to both sides of nave. 2 2-light and 1 1-light window to south side of chancel, all pointed; simple tracery. 3-light east window. The whole effect is simple and solid. Interior. Oak-framed north aisle; the posts support 2 hammer-beam trusses, simply detailed. Chancel arch without plinths or capitals, has quirked cavetto mouldings. Boarded wagon roof to chancel. Stained glass: in east window, north and south 1-light window in chancel and eastern south window of nave; memorial windows to Captain Michael George Harrison (west); Lilian Robertson Scott (copy of window in Bombay Cathedral to her husband Michael H.Scott); Winifred Ida, widow of 4th Marquess of Cholmondeley. Octagonal sandstone font with ornate oak cover; oak pulpit, lectern, choirstalls and pews; the design and furnishing all of a piece.
