4/1 Close House


Farmhouse. Early Cl9 with C17 origins, and late Cl9 and early C20 alterations.
Rendered, stone dressings, hipped slate roof. Central staircase plan. 2 storeys
3 bays. Central entrance has engaged Tuscan columns, open pediment; 4 panel door
and round-headed fanlight with intersecting tracery. Left-hand ground floor window
has c1900 splayed surround; sashes with glazing bars. Right-hand ground floor early
C20 bay window; casements. 3 upper floor windows have plain surrounds, sashes
with glazing bars. Eaves cornice. Right of centre ridge stack, left- and right-hand
eaves stacks. Right-hand return is now Close House Cottage (q,v). At rear is C17
chamfered window with round-headed; leaded fixed light. Wing projecting from left-
hand return contains King post truss inscribed on the beam REF 1688. (R & E Faraday).
