Description

GILLING WITH HARTFORTH HARTFORTH
NZ 10 NE AND SEDBURY
6/66 Gateway to Hartforth Hall
(formerly listed as The
Folly)
4.2.69
GV II

Gatehouse. C15. Rubble with dressed stone. 4-centred arch of 2 orders,
with remains of label, chamfered responds and moulded caps, spans the
present drive to the house. Above is a shouldered single-light window. Low
walls flank the carriageway, with a small rebated opening to the south. At
right angles, to the south, low walls remain of a continuing range of
buildings. Although identified as a chapel by the VCH (i; p 71) the
building appears to be the medieval gatehouse of a fortified or monastic
building.
