Howden Reservoir.

Dam. 1901-12. Edward Sandeman, engineer, W. Flockhart, architectural
adviser. Coursed, squared rock-faced gritstone, the core of large stone
blocks set in concrete. 117 ft high, 178 ft thick at base, tapering
to 10 ft at the top. Two castellated towers with arched corbel tables.
Pairs of small round-arched windows to three sides , a door to the forth side. Massive gateways at each end with battered sides and banded rock-faced
rustication. Pseudo Gibbs-type entrance arches with huge vermiculated
blocks and a solid pediment. Parapet walls linking gate piers to the
towers with a dentil course to the south. At the base of the western
tower a foundation stone inscribed:
Glory to thee in the highest
in the year of the Lord
1902-1912
This Howden Reservoir
was built by the
Derwent Valley Water Board
for the use of the people of
Derby, Leicester, Nottingham, Sheffield
and Derbyshire.
The west part of the dam lies in the parish of Hope Woodlands,
Derbyshire q.v. The Builder, October 25th 1912, pp447-9.
