Mansion House, now nursing home, c.1860. For the Shaw family (mill owners). Ashlar
front, slate roof. 9-bay symmetrical front which breaks forward in the 2nd and 8th
bay and again in the central 5 bays. 2 storeys. The central 5 bays are richly treated
with deep set round headed windows on both storeys; those to ground floor which has
doors to left and right have colonnettes. To central window first floor (now blocked)
there is a balcony on consoles. Heavy consoled cornice carrying parapet, and plainer
attic storey to central 3 bays. 2nd and 8th bays each have a two storeyed canted bay
window and a plainer cornice. This carries over the outermost bays which have, flat
headed windows, those to ground floor with cornices on consoles. Four heavily
moulded chimneys symmetrically placed. Some casements but most first floor windows
sashed. Rear elevation has central feature with elaborate first floor Venetian
window, the jambs formed of coupled pilasters.
