Chest tomb. Earliest recorded date 1701, to Thomas Rooke (or
Hooke). Portland stone. A heavy ledger width moulded edge on a
chest with 2-panelled S side, plain N, and deep bolstered
ends, all on a moulded base, partly sunk to the ground. The 2
panels are sunk under scalloped arches carried on 'Doric'
pilasters with very wide caps, and containing good lettering
in capitals to the inscriptions. The W end has a crude skull
with flanking crossed bones, and the E end a worn carved
angel, all in high relief. This is a well retained and
characteristic example of a design used in the late C17 and
early C18.
