Church. South wall probably early medieval, the rest early C15 with
slightly later tower. Kirkby Chapel 1632. Perpendicular style. Nave
windows (south side) and internal restorations of 1874. Rough coursed
rubble to south wall, the rest deeply coursed stone. Stone slate roofs,
that to chancel being lower. Two-stage square west tower, 3-bay nave
with lean-to north aisle, and gabled south porch, 3-bay chancel with
Kirkby Chapel on north side. Diagonal buttresses to tower, reducing
with off-sets. West door with moulded surround and hood mould. Large
3-light traceried west window (restored). 4-light mullioned and transomed
bell-chamber openings with traceried heads. Gargoyles, crenellated parapet
and 8 crocketed pinnacles. Large 2-light windows to nave with arched lights
and hood moulds. North aisle windows square headed, one of two lights with
cusped heads, the other of three lights with cambered heads. 2-light chancel
windows, square headed with cusped lights. 3-light east window with arched
head. On south side of chancel is a priest's door and also a memorial
tablet to Elizabeth, wife of Thomas Cooper, d.1784 with fluted jambs, apron
and scrolled, open-pedimented top. Also set in the wall is a small medieval
grave slab with cross and shears.

Interior: 3-bay north arcade on octagonal piers with splayed and moulded
capitals. Double chamfered arches. Similar large chancel arch on small
corbels. 2-bay arcade to chancel. Queen-post roof trusses with cross
struts, to nave. Tie-beams and principal rafters are moulded, the rest
probably C19 replacements. Two tiers of curved wind-bracing, with similar
to porch roof. Good, panelled chancel roof with pendant finials. Pews
and chancel screen of 1874. Elegant C18 pulpit in panelled oak with
tester, stair and door. Tulip font, late C17 with irregular fluting, on
round gadrooned pedestal. Elaborate brass candelabra of 1832 donated by
Henry Leah of Bierley Hall, Bradford. C15 stained glass in east window:
Crucifixion with the Virgin and St. John, all incomplete. Glass in chancel
south window of similar date: St. Michael in armour and another angel
(Pevsner). In the south wall is a reset tympanum from the Norman church
formerly near the site. It shows the Lion and the Lamb. The top part
is missing. Under it is a small piscina.

Memorials: Brass plate in chancel reads: HEARE LYETH THE BODY OF ROBART
TALLOT LATE OF BENTLEY GRANGE IN THE COUNTYE OF YORKE. YEOMAN. WHO HAD
ISSWE BY JOHANE HIS WYF V SONES . I . VI DOUGHTERS AND DEPARTED THIS LIFE
THE XIIII DAY OF OCTOBAR ANNO DOMII 1605 IN THE 76 YEARS OF HIS AIGE.
Behind the organ to left is a tablet in scrolled surround of 1700 to Mary
wife of Richd Woolfendin of Lodg. A vertical grave slab to Richard Wortley
"aged 3 months and odd days" (d.1687). A marble memorial to William Wheatley
of White Cross, 1766. Memorial to Henry Leah of Emley, Mason, d.1800, of
black and white marble with ascending soul with angel, signed W. Williams
of Huddersfield. Above the nave door is a wooden, late C18 table of
'BENEFACTIONS TO THE POOR OF EMLEY'.
