Description

DARRINGTON JACKSON LANE SE41NE Wentbridge 7/21 Church of St. John 11.12.1967 the Evangelist (formerly listed as Church of St. John) - II Church. 1878, by Sir Arthur Blomfield. Rock-faced magnesian limestone, red tile roofs. Small building of cruciform plan, with crossing tower. In C12 northern French style. Short buttressed 3-bay nave; gabled south porch to lst-bay has 2-centred arched outer doorway with set-in shafts which have stiff-leaf capitals (now heavily eroded), and deeply-undercut moulding to the arch with dogtooth decoration, and a hoodmould; above the door, a lozenge carved with the emblem of the Evangelist; small coupled lancets in each side wall. Nave has single and coupled lancets with hoodmoulds. Transepts have tall coupled lancets with quatrefoils above and gable copings with apex crosses. South transept has a 2-centred arched moulded doorway on east side. Short apsidal chancel has a sill band and a single lancet in each side. Crossing tower of one stage has three deeply-recessed lancet belfry louvres in each side, with linked hoodmoulds, steeply-pitched pyramidal roof. Interior has rib-vaulted crossing and apse.
