Fountain

II

Fountain and canopy. Late C19. Yellow sandstone ashlar. Square
fountain canopy set in triangular surround. Low outer walling
originally supporting railings and forming triangular surround with
central opening to north west and cobble sets as paving. Eastern
front of canopy: square corner piers with roll moulds to corners and
moulded bases and with capital formed by the splaying outwards of the
columns at their tops. Shaped archway above set in gable which has an
inscription above the arch reading IN:MEMORY of JOHN:HOSKEN:HARPER:ESQ
OF:DAVENHAM:HALL. Crow-steps behind gable. Octagonal shaft to spire
above with coat of arms and band of fig leaf ornament at top, gablets
to all sides behind which rises the octagonal spirelet. Octagonal
basin to fountain with fountainhead of lions head with spout in mouth
on circular moulded shaft. Western side, similar to Eastern front
with inscription reading HE:WAS:A:FATHER:TO:THE:POOR:AND:THE:CAUSE:
WHICH:HE:KNEW:NOT:HE:SEARCHED:OUT:JOB CH.29V.16.
