17.11.78 Post Office).

Wrongly shown on O.S. plan as Marton Road. Post office, 1878/79, with late
C20 right staircase extension. Sandstone banded rusticated ground floor;
brick in Flemish bond with stone dressings, on upper floors; and ashlar
basement. Welsh slate roof. Baroque style. 3 storeys, basement and attic,
4 bays. In end bays 4 steps up to 3-panel double doors and overlights, in
fluted coved surrounds, under enriched bracketed, Greek-key friezes and
cornice hoods with enriched soffits. Sash windows: with moulded sills and
panelled aprons, in moulded surrounds under bracketed similar frieze and
fluted band, on ground floor. Upper-floor windows in architraves:
first-floor under bracketed panelled friezes and pediments, segmental in 2
middle bays; balustraded aprons and moulded sill string. Guilloche-moulded
sill band on 2nd floor. Heavy top entablature. Balusters missing from
parapet with flagpole. 2 blocked basement windows. Mansard roof has
corniced flat-roofed dormers with paired sash windows and glazing bars.
Circular metal conical-roofed ridge ventilator. Corniced stacks at ends and
on front slope. Staircase extension in keeping. Early C20 rear extensions
and 7-bay left extension not of special interest.
