Description

SOUTH HILL MADERS
SX 37 SW
2/244 Meaders Cottage
II

Farmhouse, now cottage. Circa C17, partly remodelled in mid C19. Stone rubble
and cob with mid C19 brick dressings on front. Rag slate roof with gable ends.
Rendered shafts on gable ends. Although interior not inspected it appears to have
originally been a 3-room and through passage plan with stair turrets at rear of hall
and lower room , which was probably the kitchen and is heated by a gable end stack.
The hall might have had an axial stack now truncated and inner room has gable end
stack. Rear outshut at rear of higher end and porch to rear of former passage
between stair turrets. Remodelled circa early C19 when house was given a symmetrical
front with central entrance inserted into original hall and passage front door
converted into a window. Internal plan probably altered at same time. Circa C19
lean-to wing on right of front, extending to right.
2 storeys. Remodelled regular 3-window front. Ground floor with two 4-pane sashes
beneath brick segmental arches. Central, partly glazed C20 door beneath brick
segmental arch. Above two 4-pane sashes flanking a narrow 2-pane sash. Brick
dressings. Stone rubble lean-to beneath corrugated asbestos sloping roof projecting
on right-hand side of front elevation. Rear elevation with staircase projection with
narrow rectangular stair window. Winder stairs within. Rear elevation particularly
unspoilt.
Interior not inspected.
