Description

SW 63 NW CROWAN CLOWANCE

1/136 Barn at SW629303 (north of Clowance
- Barton Farmhouse)

GV II

Barn with horse engine house. Circa early C19. Granite and killas rubble walls with
dressed granite quoins, jambstones, sills, lintels and voussoirs. Grouted scantle
slate hipped roofs with red clay ridge tiles.
Overall L-shaped plan: large barn with horse engine house at right angles behind the
right hand side and lower shippon with store set back and adjoining the left hand
side of the barn. Late C19 lean-to at the right hand side of the horse engine house.
2 storeys. 2 south facing 3 window fronts, the shippon front, left, set back from
the main barn front. The barn has 4 ground floor openings with round-headed arches,
the window openings at the far left and right also with flat lintel under the arches
the left hand opening later converted to a doorway. The doorway third from left is
wider and just above the left hand jamb is a first floor loading doorway. Ledged
doors, 2 original shuttered 2-light windows at first floor left. The shippon front
has nearly symmetrical 2 window part left with central doorway integral with regular
1 window front right with doorway at the far right; in appearance like a house with
adjoining cottage. The horse engine house has a large and small doorway at the
ground floor rear.
Interior not inspected but the floors and roofs are likely to be original.
High quality farm buildings at the principal farm of the Clowance estate.
