4/286 West Gate Lodge

GV II

Lodge to Fonthill Abbey. Dated 1860, for the Marquess of
Westminster. Flemish bond red brick with yellow brick dressings
and diaper patterns in vitrified brick steeply-pitched and gabled
tiled roof, diagonally-set brick stacks. Single storey and attic,
1-window. Large open timber-framed gabled porch with planked door
to right, group of three octagonal-paned casements to left have
Tudor-arched heads on brick shafts, 2-light casement with arched
heads on shafts to gable over, cusped barge boards. Right return
facing drive has canted bay with octaganol-paned casements, 2-light
casement over with arched heads on shafts, Westminster heraldic
arms and date 1860 on stone tablet to gable. Left return has
lean-to against ground floor, gabled oriel dormer to attic.
Interior not inspected. One of a pair of good lodges to Fonthill
Abbey (demolished 1955), see also Stone Gate Lodge, (q.v. Fonthill
Gifford CP).
