Description

HATTON CHURCH LANE TF 17 NE (north side) 5/24 Church of St. Stephen 14.9.66 G.V. II Parish church. C13, 1870 by James Fowler. Red brick with limestone ashlar dressings and greenstone ashlar bands. Slate roofs with decorative, red ridge tiles and ashlar coped gables and cross finials. Nave with south porch, apsidal chancel with south vestry and bell turret. Ashlar dressed plinth runs round whole church. Regularly placed, ashlar dressed buttresses. West front with ashlar dressed, 2 stage angle buttresses and moulded ashlar string course. West window re-using some C13 fragments, with pointed head, 2 pointed lights, cusped vesica, hood mould and C13 head label stops. Blind, cusped panel above. North west, 3 stage buttress re-using C13 crocketed and finialled gables with tall, C19 ashlar, octagonal chimney above with small pointed openings. North side of nave with moulded ashlar string course. Broad, pointed ashlar dressed window to west with 3 pointed lights with upper, secondary pointed heads, hood mould and foliate label stops. Pair of pointed windows to east, each with 2 pointed lights and geometrical tracery. Apsidal chancel with pair of ashlar dressed cusped lancets to west. Single pointed, cusped lights flank rectangular east window with 3 pointed cusped lights with small block motifs in spandrels. Blind quatrefoiled plaque beneath. South vestry partly engaged to slender brick and ashlar bell turret with east doorway with caernarvon head and plank door. Ashlar dressed slit light above with bell opening above with pointed head, nook shafts and shaft rings. Stone spirelet above. South side of vestry with rectangular 2 light window with trefoiled tracery. Ornate, polygonal chimney with blind, traceried arcading and gable rises from buttress to west. South side of nave with 2 pointed windows, that to east of 2 lights, that to west of 3 lights, both with geometric tracery, hood mould and head label stops. Steeply gabled south porch with single east and west trefoil headed lights. Squat gabled angle buttresses. Pointed doorway with inner chamfered order with head and jambs in one, outer order with chamfered jambs and bowtell moulded head, hood mould and ornate label stops. Blind plate traceried oculus above. Interior south doorway with pointed head, chamfered surround, hood mould and dove and squirrel label stops. Interior west wall with re-used C13 moulded string course. Ashlar bands on north and south walls. South doorway with keeled hood mould and kings' head label stops. North east windows of nave divided by free-standing shaft with moulded capital. Tall, pointed chancel arch with inner moulded order supported by ornate corbels. Hood mould continues over wall to north and south. Pointed organ arch in north side of chancel, inner order supported on ornate shafts possibly re-using medieval masonry, outer order of ashlar dressed brick. Ashlar hood mould with fillet, possibly re-using medieval fragments. Small pointed doorway to east with plank door. Moulded ashlar string course and decorated eaves run round apse. Small sedilia under window in south wall with pointed arch on each side and panelled back. Ornate reredos with 3 pointed openings divided by free standing shafts. 3 trefoil headed arches beneath with chamfered spandrels, coloured marble shafts and ornate tiled backs. Ashlar dressed piscina set beneath north window. Tall C19 candelabra. C19 drum font of 8 large rolls supported on 8 moulded columns. Stone pulpit with single shaft with shaft ring and quatrefoiled panel. C20 pews.
